Bank of England bond sales cost the Treasury £108bn since 2022

The central bank bought nearly £900bn in government debt over a decade but is now actively selling it off. Because ministers previously promised to cover any shortfalls, these ongoing market sales have already triggered £36bn in direct taxpayer losses. The Office for Budget Responsibility, the UK's financial watchdog, expects the policy to cost another £94bn across the next four years.
