Avanti West Coast paid passengers more than £20m in delay repay compensation over just three months this summer, according to official figures reported by the Guardian. Almost £9.3m went out in the four weeks to 25 July alone, close to the operator's yearly profit in recent years. Payouts across Britain's railways have been climbing, and Avanti's bill is expected to pass £70m this financial year.
