Conservation charities completed the £30m purchase of the 9,500-acre Rothbury Estate in Northumberland, owned by the Percy family for about 700 years, after a two-year appeal backed by Sir David Attenborough. More than 25,000 people donated, alongside a £5m National Lottery grant and £1.94m from Defra. The Wildlife Trusts plan to restore nature and support farming, though some farmers have called the purchase a folly.
