AI job cuts in 2026 already top past two years combined

AI is now the leading reason for job cuts in the US, with AI-linked layoffs in the first five months of 2026 already exceeding the combined total from 2024 and 2025. Employers attributed 38,579 job cuts to automation in May alone, the highest monthly figure since tracking began in 2023. Total AI-linked job cuts in 2026 have reached 87,714, compared to 54,836 in 2025 and 12,742 in 2024 combined.
