124 environmental defenders killed in 2025 protecting land

A Global Witness report established that 124 land and environmental activists were murdered in 2025 as they worked to safeguard natural resources. Indigenous people and small-scale farmers protecting their land made up almost 75% of the victims. The number of killings fell from 2024, but activists still face threats like criminal charges and online abuse.
