Explained in plain English

Why use RPI inflation?

The Retail Price Index (RPI) is an older measure of inflation that generally produces higher figures than the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which the Bank of England targets. By linking VED to RPI, the government ensures a greater increase in tax revenue over time, helping to boost the Treasury's income.
