Explained in plain English

Why does plankton matter so much?

Plankton are tiny organisms at the base of the marine food web, much like plants on land. They convert sunlight into energy, feeding everything from small fish to massive whales. The Cefas study warns that a decline in key plankton groups could destabilise entire ecosystems, threatening the fish we eat and the overall health of our oceans.
