Why do places get renamed?

Renaming places often reflects significant political or cultural shifts, or to honour important figures or events. It can be a way for new regimes to assert authority, or for societies to move past controversial histories. Donald Trump's suggestion, however, appears to be a more personal and less formal proposal.
