Why do bystanders intervene?

In the Texas incident, two students were hurt while intervening to help a third. This act of 'prosocial behaviour' often stems from empathy, a sense of duty, or a desire to protect others, even at personal risk. It's a complex human response, sometimes driven by instinct and sometimes by learned values.
