Why are old buildings special?

Historic buildings, like the one on fire in Edinburgh, are often protected due to their architectural or cultural significance. They can be more challenging to fight fires in because of their construction materials and intricate layouts. Losing them means losing a piece of shared heritage and the stories they tell about our past.
