Explained in plain English

Why are house prices falling?

House prices are falling because fewer people can afford to buy. Mortgage costs are climbing, making monthly repayments much higher. This means fewer new buyer inquiries, so sellers have to lower their asking prices to find a buyer. Nationwide's chief economist expects prices to fall further for this reason.
