Explained in plain English

Who was the first English winner?

Before Michael Owen in 2001 and Harry Kane today, only one other Englishman had ever won the Ballon d'Or: Stanley Matthews, way back in 1956. He was the very first recipient of the award, playing for Blackpool at the time. This makes Kane's win even more significant for English football history.
