Explained in plain English

Who pays for the Lords?

Members of the House of Lords are not paid a salary. Instead, they can claim a daily allowance for attending sittings, plus travel expenses. This is funded by the taxpayer. The House of Lords plays a role in scrutinising government spending, including the Budget announced by Chancellor John Healey.
