What's 'planned obsolescence'?

Planned obsolescence is when a product is designed to have a limited lifespan, either through its build quality or by making it difficult to repair, encouraging consumers to buy replacements. While Apple's policy of declaring products obsolete after seven years isn't strictly planned obsolescence in the design phase, it does contribute to a cycle of upgrading rather than long-term repair.
