Explained in plain English
A special dividend is an extra payment companies make to shareholders, on top of their regular dividends. It's often a one-off event, usually when a company has a lot of spare cash, perhaps from an unexpected profit boom like Samsung's. It's a way to share success directly with the people who own a piece of the company.
