What's a 'seed' in tennis?

A 'seed' is a player ranked highly and placed in the draw to prevent top players from meeting too early. Zverev, as the 'top seed', was considered the strongest player entering the tournament. Khachanov, being 'unseeded', wasn't expected to go as far, making Zverev's win less surprising.
