What's a 'cold snap'?

A cold snap is a sudden period of very cold weather. In the UK, this usually means temperatures well below freezing for several days or weeks. When this happens, demand for heating rockets, putting a huge strain on energy supplies and potentially leading to shortages if reserves are low.
