The Harlequin ladybirds carry a sexually transmitted fungal infection called Laboulbeniales. This fungus doesn't usually kill the ladybirds but can weaken them, making them less able to reproduce. It spreads during mating, which is why it's considered an STD, and is a key factor in their threat to native species.
