What is 'unauthorised absence'?

An unauthorised absence means a child is out of school without permission from the headteacher. This differs from authorised absences, which might include illness, medical appointments, or religious observance. The 332,000 pupils missing school after the World Cup game would generally be classed as unauthorised unless specific arrangements were made with their schools.
