Explained in plain English
What is the Milky Way?
Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is a huge collection of stars, gas, and dust. It's shaped like a flat disc with spiral arms, but this story suggests it wasn't always that way. The collision with the Gaia Sausage galaxy is thought to have dramatically changed its orientation, flipping it on its side over hundreds of millions of years.
