What is protectionism?

Protectionism is when a country tries to shield its own industries from foreign competition by making imported goods more expensive or harder to get. Tariffs are a common protectionist tool. The idea is to boost local jobs and production, but it can also lead to higher prices for consumers and less choice, as well as potential retaliation from other countries.
