What is NATO, exactly?

NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It's a military alliance formed after World War Two, primarily to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. If one member is attacked, all members are committed to defending them. This is why the US intelligence report about a potential Russian attack on a NATO member is so significant, as it could escalate into a much wider conflict.
