What is NATO and its purpose?

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, is a military alliance of 32 countries, including the UK and US. Its core principle is collective defence: an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. Members contribute financially and militarily to ensure mutual security, particularly in Europe, since its formation after World War Two.
