What is lineside equipment?

Lineside equipment refers to all the infrastructure alongside train tracks that helps trains run safely and efficiently. This includes signalling systems, which tell drivers when it's safe to proceed, and power cables. Damage to these, as seen in the Gatwick to Purley fire, can cause widespread disruption because trains rely on them for communication and power.
