What is gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common condition that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated, as it did for Karen Soper. It's caused by plaque build-up, which inflames the gums. Early signs include bleeding gums, but it can progress to damage the bone supporting teeth.
