What is an operating system?

An operating system, or OS, is the core software that manages all the hardware and other programs on a device. Think of it as the conductor of an orchestra. iPadOS 27 runs iPads, watchOS 27 runs Apple Watches, and so on. Without an OS, your device wouldn't know how to function or run any apps.
