What is a trot-up?

Before the final showjumping phase at events like Burghley, horses undergo a veterinary inspection called a trot-up. This ensures they are sound and fit to compete, prioritising animal welfare. The horse is trotted in hand for the ground jury, who assess its gait and overall condition. If there are concerns, the horse may be sent to a holding box for a second look.
