What is a rip current?

Rip currents are powerful channels of water moving away from the shore, often found near beaches. They can quickly pull swimmers out to sea, making it very difficult to swim back to safety. While the exact cause of difficulty in the Shoreham incident isn't confirmed, rip currents are a common danger in coastal waters, even for strong swimmers.
