What is a release clause?

A release clause is a pre-agreed fee in a player's contract. If another club offers this amount, the player's current club must allow them to discuss personal terms. It's designed to protect clubs by setting a minimum value, but it can also make it easier for players to move if a suitor meets the price, as Barcelona are finding with Martinez.
