What is a 'newly promoted' team?

In English football, teams compete in a league system with promotion and relegation. When a team performs well in a lower division, they earn the right to 'promote' to a higher league like the Premier League. Coventry, in this story, would have been promoted from the Championship, facing much tougher competition and bigger clubs like Manchester City.
