What is a galactic merger?

A galactic merger is when two or more galaxies collide and combine, often with the larger galaxy absorbing the smaller one. This isn't a violent crash in the way we might imagine, as the distances between stars are so vast. Instead, it's a slow dance of gravitational forces stretching over millions of years, leading to a new, larger galaxy.
