What is a 'first leg' in football?

In knockout football competitions, teams often play two matches against each other, known as 'legs'. One match is played at each team's home ground. The 'first leg' is the initial game, and the 'second leg' is the return match. The team with the best aggregate score over both legs progresses to the next round.
