What is a county in Ireland?
Counties are administrative divisions in Ireland, similar to shires in England. There are 32 traditional counties, 26 in the Republic of Ireland and 6 in Northern Ireland. These counties are important for local government, but also form the basis for sporting teams, like the Donegal Gaelic football team that James McHugh played for.
