What causes flash floods?

Flash floods, like those near the Nepal-Tibet border, happen when heavy rainfall quickly overwhelms an area's drainage capacity. This is common in mountainous regions where steep slopes mean water runs off rapidly, often carrying mud and debris. The ground can't absorb the water fast enough, leading to sudden, powerful torrents that are incredibly dangerous and destructive.
