What are pre-season friendlies?

Before the serious league games begin, football clubs play friendly matches to get players fit, try out new tactics, and integrate new signings. These games don't count for points or trophies, so the result isn't the main focus, though a loss like Manchester United's can still be a bit of a confidence knock before the Premier League season kicks off.
