How safe are cycling helmets?

Current EU helmet safety standards are rated for impacts at speeds up to 19.5 km/h. While this might be adequate for casual cycling, the CPA union argues it's insufficient for professional road racing, where speeds are much higher. Fin Tarling's tragic death has reignited calls for these standards to be reviewed and significantly improved to offer better protection.
