How many species lived together?

It's easy to think of human evolution as a straight line, but the story shows many species coexisted. Around 300,000 years ago, at least nine different walking ape species lived at the same time. This suggests a much more diverse prehistoric world than many people imagine, with various human-like species sharing the planet.
