Explained in plain English
The Panama Canal uses a system of locks to lift ships over the continental divide. These locks operate by filling and emptying with vast amounts of freshwater, primarily from Gatun Lake. Each ship transit uses millions of gallons of water, which then flows out to sea. Low rainfall means less water for the lake, making it harder to operate the locks.
