Bluetongue is spread by biting midges, not directly from animal to animal. These tiny insects pick up the virus from infected livestock and then transmit it when they bite other animals. This makes controlling outbreaks particularly challenging, especially as midges can be carried long distances by the wind, explaining why Scotland has now seen its first case.
