How do gems get their colour?

Gemstones like sapphire and ruby get their vibrant colours from tiny amounts of chemical impurities within their crystal structure. These impurities replace some of the original atoms, absorbing certain wavelengths of light and reflecting others, which our eyes then perceive as colour. For example, iron and titanium make corundum blue.
