How do football teams pick captains?

Captains in football are often chosen for their leadership qualities, experience, and ability to motivate teammates. Sometimes, as with Lamine Yamal's vice-captaincy, a dressing-room vote is involved, showing the players' trust. Other times, the manager makes the decision. The captain is the team's representative on the pitch and often the first point of contact with the referee.
