How do billionaires get rich?

Elon Musk's fortune isn't just cash in a bank. It's mostly tied up in the value of his companies, like Tesla and SpaceX. When these companies perform well, or investors believe they will, the value of his shares goes up, making him richer. The opposite also happens, as seen when SpaceX's stock fell.
