The Bank Levy was an annual tax on the balance sheets of UK banks and building societies, introduced in 2011 to make banks contribute more after the financial crisis. It aimed to make the financial system safer by discouraging excessive borrowing. The levy raised billions for the Treasury before being phased out from 2016.
