How are wind speeds measured?

Wind speeds, like the 30mph gusts forecast for Sunday, are typically measured at a standard height of 10 metres (about 33 feet) above the ground in open, unobstructed areas. This standardised measurement ensures consistency and comparability across different locations, even though wind at street level can feel very different.
