How a PM resigns

When a Prime Minister decides to step down, like Keir Starmer did, they must formally offer their resignation to the monarch. This is a key constitutional step, as the King or Queen is the Head of State. The monarch then accepts the resignation, paving the way for a new Prime Minister to be appointed and form a new government.
