Explained in plain English

Has the time always been GMT?

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) has been the UK's standard since 1880, but the country has experimented with other systems. For example, from 1968 to 1971, the UK observed British Standard Time, meaning clocks stayed one hour ahead of GMT all year round. This was eventually reversed.
