Why does the NFU warn of coming food shortages?
NFU president Tom Bradshaw says record dryness will likely cut supplies of British wheat, oats and vegetables, with growers already short of water. England got just 5.6mm of rain by 30 July, an eighth of the long-term average and the driest since 1911, while Wales logged 7.9mm. Drought is now declared across large parts of England and Wales, and 20 million people face hosepipe bans.
