Waitrose is opening its first new supermarket in eight years today in Cricklewood, north London, as part of a £1bn investment plan. A second store in Hale Barns, Greater Manchester, follows next month, with four smaller shops due next year and 29 refurbishments planned. The John Lewis-owned grocer is holding market share but faces growing competition from a resurgent Marks & Spencer in food retail.
