United Utilities fined £900,000 for 2023 sewage spill

United Utilities received a record £900,000 fine because untreated sewage entered the Irish Sea for more than 35 hours in June 2023. According to the Environment Agency, the environmental watchdog, the contamination resulted from a pipe failure at Fleetwood Wastewater Treatment Works. The sewage spill led to swimming bans on eight Fylde coastline bathing waters and temporary closures of three shellfish beds.
