UN rights chief warns AI could threaten humanity

Volker Turk, the UN human rights chief, cautioned on Monday that sophisticated artificial intelligence might grow sufficiently potent to present an "existential risk to humanity". Speaking in Geneva, he urged companies to reduce these risks and called for "cast iron guarantees" around AI's safety and security. Turk plans to send letters to AI companies in the coming days, asking them to mitigate the dangers.
